Bad Moms

‘Bad Moms’, starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, is a comedy covering the hardships of motherhood for three middle class American moms. Due to these hardships, these mothers decide to rebel against their daily responsibilities by going wild and doing whatever it is they please. At the same time, one of the moms, Amy (Mila Kunis), is on a personal mission to run for the PTA president at her daughter’s local school to change the dynamic of academics and the responsibilities of mothers.

My biggest problem with this movie is its focus. Right from the get go, the film attempts to juggle between multiple storylines; relationship with kids, workplace dynamic, divorce, new love interests,  PTA president campaign etc. All these different storylines, without cohesive links between one another, draw away interest from the main characters of the film. This film was also made to target a certain demographic; middle class mothers. However it does so in a very obscure manner through using unnecessary coarse language and showing public acts of disobedience. I feel these two elements are being overused in films of this particular genre.

‘Bad Moms’ also reminded me of another film in the same genre released just last year; Bad Grandpa. Unfortunately, this is no compliment because Bad Grandpa is one of the worse comedies I have ever seen. The two films share some drastically similiar elements such as their overuse of slow mo and light exposure during the scenes shot during the day. Both films were also strictly listed as comedies but their jokes were very hit and miss.

The only positives I can take away from this film were Mila Kunis and the underlying message of the film. It was refreshing to see Mila Kunis back on the big screen; I always find her performances to be natural and balanced. Also the message the film was trying to make during its 3rd act (I’ll leave y’all to find that out) was also very sweet.

As a whole, ‘Bad Moms’ is a B rated comedy at best. Its lack of focus negatively influences many aspects of the film such as its characters and quality of humor. At the same time, this movie shares a lot of similiar elements to ‘Bad Grandpa’, one of the worst comedies I have ever seen. However ‘Bad Moms’ does have some saving graces such as Mila Kunis.

RATING: 6/10
